Future Investment

The new Peterhead Community Campus has been selected as one of the first projects set to benefit from a nationwide £1 billion investment programme. The Peterhead Community Campus is in the Council’s Capital Plan for the years 2023- 2028. Aberdeenshire Council has set aside £71 million to invest in this project.  This extensive project is a key aspect of the Peterhead Masterplan, which also includes a new care home and the potential for new affordable housing as well as commercial units.

Cinema Development

Recently, encouraged through the Council’s Property Investment Fund, a private company announced the Arc Cinema Development in Marischal Street, which will see the Old Gala Bingo Hall converted into a luxury 5-screen cinema. This transformational development will attract additional footfall to Peterhead town centre and open up new opportunities for the businesses and community of Peterhead. The cinema will be operational in 2020 and offers opportunities for complimentary leisure and cultural services, cafes and  restaurants to take advantage of increased footfall in the town centre.

To date 12% of the housing development within Aberdeenshire is within Peterhead, second to Inverurie in terms of new build completions at 122 which is a significant proportion of the Aberdeenshire total of 988.

Conservation Area Regeneration SchemE & Public Realm Investment

Peterhead Development Partnership (PDP) is spearheading potential investment into the Conservation Area by targeting external funding to carry out sensitive repairs and enhancements to historic properties and spaces within the town centre. Bids to external funders are scheduled for spring/summer 2020.  In preparation, the Council has taken forward £75,000 of development work to prepare bids to the Historic Environment Scotland for a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme, and to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to reuse historic buildings for contemporary purposes. Specific priority buildings include Arbuthnot House; the Town House; the former Royal British Legion building; 34 Broad Street; and the Muckle Kirk. Specific priority public realm spaces targeted for enhancement include the Broad Street and Maiden Street car parks.

The £250,000 enhancement of Drummer’s Corner to provide a new performance space, artwork, and improve amenity lighting is also scheduled to take place in 2020.

Rediscover Peterhead, Business Improvement District

A significant component of Peterhead town centre and its economic future is the local Business Improvement District, Rediscover Peterhead Ltd. Operating from December 2017, during its 5 year term some £500,000 of investment will be made, generated from the levy from town centre businesses. This funds permanent staff to specifically roll out the 5 year business plan and deliver the core initiatives, projects and events. In addition to that, the aim is to lever further external funding to boost total spending in Peterhead town centre over the five year period to potentially £800,000 – £1 million.
